Clemson University, located a short distance from Anderson, recently held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new International Center for Automotive Research.
The center, which will cost $14m, is expected to create 220 jobs, which bodes well for business card printing, as these new employees will no doubt want to inform people of their new positions.
The new building, which will be 82,000 square feet in size, is designed to attract more automotive companies to the campus, provide more engineers, and generate $2.6m in private investment.
LS3P Associates Ltd. in Greenville is the architect for the building and the contractor is Sherman Construction Company of Piedmont. Completion of the project and occupancy are scheduled for the end of 2015. This is the sixth and last building in a part of campus known as Technology Neighborhood I. There are other centers on campus, which have attracted companies such as Michelin, Sage Automotive, and ESYS Automation.
According to James P. Clements, President of the University, the new building will provide numerous opportunities for students, researchers, and partners in industry as an innovative environment and a place to learn and develop breakthroughs in the sector.
Some 30,000 square feet in the building will be dedicated to lab and classroom space for the 212 students in the automotive engineering department. Almost all of them go on to work in academics or the automotive industry.
