Something Rotten! is the period piece musical comedy coming to the Market Theatre in Anderson this spring.
Taking place in the 1600s, the story focuses on one playwright’s mission of creating the world’s first musical. The main character in the story is trying to outdo William Shakespeare himself, who is the antagonist in the story. Shakespeare is depicted as being as villainous as he is successful, as well as being the object of desire for many.
The show is touted as a wacky send-up of the theatre itself, being nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
According to the Market Theatre, Something Rotten! is rated PG for some mild crude humor and innuendo.
Something Rotten! is directed by Dalton Cole, with musical direction by Jennings Thompson. The book is by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell. Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick created the concept of the story and music and lyrics.
Organizers at the Market Theatre said people who enjoy shows like & Juliet, Beetlejuice: The Musical and The Producers would probably enjoy Something Rotten!

The Market Theatre’s production of Something Rotten! is playing from April 25 through May 12 at 110 Federal St., Suite 6. There are evening shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and matinee shows on Sundays at 3 p.m. The final performance is on Monday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15-$20 and can be purchased online.
