While many may not have heard of them, paw paws are a fruit native to the Pittsburgh area, and anyone who would like to learn more about them, and the trees they grow on, is welcome to attend an upcoming activity.
Garden Dreams has planned a function that will introduce paw paws to the public. The participants will be able to discover what makes these plants special, and also how they offer both seasonal landscape interest and food.
Starting in mid-September, members of the public will be able to both taste some of the paw paws beginning to ripen in the local area, and they can also find out how to grow them in their own garden. One of the main points of the presentation will be a discussion of the zebra swallowtail butterfly and how it depends on these plants for survival.
While there is no charge to attend the function, donations to an initiative that engages in habitat restoration will be appreciated. Materials for a learning session can be obtained from area brochure printing companies.
These chances to discover paw paws and why they may be a good choice for local gardens will be held on the next three Tuesdays – September 20, September 27, and October 4. They will all be on offer at 80 Holland Avenue and begin at 4:30 pm.
