Pittsburgh workshop explores world of edible weeds

Mother Nature offers a bounty of “wild foods”, and a Pittsburgh workshop will help attendees take full advantage of this opportunity.

An activity organized by Grow Pittsburgh will provide an introduction to identifying edible weeds, and it is part of its larger Backyard Farm School collection of in-person classes. It will take place outdoors under cover, and everyone is reminded to dress for the weather.

The workshop will introduce how to safely harvest weeds, including when and where to find them and how to use sustainable foraging practices. Everyone will learn how removing these unwanted plants early can help to keep them under control in their vegetable and other gardens, and tips for using them in the kitchen will be provided. The location for the session offers street parking and can be reached by public transit, and it's advised that everyone bring a water bottle to refill on-site.

More people are developing an interest in living a more sustainable lifestyle, and knowing how, where and when to forage for wild food can be a part of their plans. Basic field guides can be prepared for an activity by Stationery printers using comb binding and other techniques, and they may be paired with promotional Pens so the attendees can make any notes they wish.

This introduction to making the most of Nature's bounty in one’s own backyard will begin at 5:30 pm on May 12th. Shiloh Farm is located at 7209 Thomas Boulevard.
