Trees growing in an urban environment face challenges that may be different than those in a rural or suburban planting. A short course planned for Pittsburgh will be exploring this in depth, and anyone age 16 and up is invited to register.
The class, which is being offered through support from Tree Pittsburgh, will explore tree care from an urban perspective. The class will learn about how factors such as pollution, depleted soils and even reduced lighting levels can affect the health and growth of trees and other plants, and they will also discover how cultural practices can help them to grow and thrive.
The students will learn about urban silviculture, including the basics of tree biology. They will find out how they can identify trees in any season, how to correctly care for a trees, and also proper pruning techniques. They will even discover ways they can encourage their whole community to get involved in urban horticulture, including organizing planting days for area parks, brownfields, and other public spaces.
The fee to take a seat in the course is $40, and this covers the cost of learning materials as well as lunch. Stationery printers will be able to use graphic design techniques to prepare certificates that can be given to the students who successfully complete this sort of training event.
Tree Pittsburgh is set to host this educational opportunity on December 7. It will be offered at 32 62nd Street.
