Special day returns to Leechburg

An annual event that has inspired thousands of attendees and become the subject of a book is returning to Leechburg.

Registration is now open for the 2023 IPG Fitness Pink Day 5K. Pink Day was founded in 2011 by Vicki and Gary Peterson, who own a small gift shop and garden center in Leechburg. They wanted to become more involved with the community, and decided to set up an event with a pink hydrangea bush at its center. Every time someone purchased this specific hydrangea, the Petersons made a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The idea took off, and Pink Day became a signature annual event for Leechburg. On that day, Market Street, the town’s main street, is closed to traffic for three blocks, creating a party atmosphere, and drawing thousands of participants every year. The celebration lasts all day and involves as many as 100 local organizations and vendors, including food vendors, as well as raffles, children’s activities, and more.

The Leechburg event inspired a book, “A Trip to Pink Day.” All the proceeds from the sale of this book are collected by Leechburg’s Pink Day officials and go to support the Breast Cancer Research Fund.

This year’s Pink Day is September 16, and everyone who registers before this Friday, September 1 will receive a participation medal as well as a JPG 5K Pink Day shirt. Organizers of outdoor events like this can use banner printing to create Signs for various locations.
