Leechburg celebrates trail opening

Leechburg is having an opening celebration for its new Towpath trail this April.

Leechburg Area Community Development Corporation, Leechburg Borough and Armstrong Trails are hosting the ribbon-cutting event at Riverfront Park Gazebo. The celebration is free and will take place rain or shine. Dogs on leashes are welcome. Free public parking will be available, but attendees should be prepared for a short walk or bike ride to the gazebo. Those planning to attend can sign up on Eventbrite. Armstrong Trails will have T-Shirts for sale. The celebration does not include lunch, but the gazebo is within walking distance of local restaurants.

The new one-mile towpath will connect Leechburg to hundreds of miles of existing trails. It runs from Mill Bridge to the footbridge in Hyde Park. Construction, which was fully managed by the Leechburg Area Community Development Corporation, started last fall after two years of discussion and planning. Trail connections will include four miles of towpath trails largely built by local volunteers that connect to the Armstrong Trails system, which offers more than 50 miles of running, walking and cycling paths. The new trail also connects to the Pittsburgh to Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway. Towns often work with Print shops to produce updated trail maps.

Leechburg Towpath Link-Up: A Trailblazing Bash will take place on Saturday, April 26 from 11 am to 1 pm at Riverfront Park Gazebo.
