What's Happening in Leechburg, PA…

Leechburg area in for a feast

An unusual event near Leechburg will teach participants how to “build” a meal from the food they forage.

Jeska Lea is the host of the event, which is called Forage-to-Feast. Lea is a holistic coach and has a passion for wellness and bodywork, which grew into a career in professional coaching.

Lea begins the session by teaching attendees how to locate, identify, and harvest local edible plants in the wild. She also provides tips on how to store them. Attendees will have a chance to smell and taste the plants so they can become familiar with them, and will also see a potted plant. This herb will be raffled off for someone to take home.

Next, participants will make their own pesto sauce, or if they prefer, a sauce using garlic mustard. A culinary expert will be on hand to offer guidance. Shop-bought pesto is often expensive because it uses ingredients like pine nuts, but the class will offer alternatives to make it more affordable.

Finally, attendees will get to put their side salads together, using local greens that provide more nutrition than those commonly found at the supermarket.

Forage-to-Feast is scheduled for this Saturday, June 1, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, at the Center of Franklin, 262 Franklin Avenue in Vandergrift, a short distance from Leechburg. When events like this are planned, organizers will often work with flyer printing to create instructional handouts for participants.
