New sports center a big deal for Penguins and township

On August 17, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Lemieux Sports Complex opened in Cranberry Township, marking a big step for the Penguins as well as a boom for Cranberry Township.

Referred to as a "world class” facility, the $70m complex is expected to bring a lot of business to the township, as well as show the area in a good light. The benefits are already underway with four new restaurants planned and a Courtyard by Marriott hotel to begin construction next month.

Penguin officials say they anticipate around 400,000 visitors to the facility per years. Moreover, all tourism related to tournaments held at the complex will outsourced to local hotels, banquet facilities, and restaurants.

Likely local establishments have already contacted their Print companies to provide them tie-in promotional materials so as to get a head start on the other businesses that will be moving into the township.

The complex will do double duty for the Pittsburgh Penguins by being both a practice facility for the team and a UPMC sports medicine center. The team sees this combination as giving it an edge in injury recovery and rehabilitation.

The Penguins have high hopes for the facility, with visions of hosting World Cup of Hockey training camps and even NHL draft combines. The complex will be a venue for amateur and youth hockey teams and tournaments as well.
