American flags will be retired with dignity at an upcoming special celebration in Cranberry Township.
As part of the country’s semi-quincentennial (250-year anniversary), the organization Retire Your Old Glory will host the patriotic event next month to ceremoniously retire tattered, torn, faded, and unused flags. This practice follows the US flag code, which deems that unserviceable flags be properly retired in a dignified manner.
As a non-profit group, Retire Old Glory was first started 15 years ago by a Cranberry Township resident and since then has collected more than 60,000 flags. Groups such as veterans, the Legion, and scout troops assist in ceremonies to retire the many flags received in 16 collection bins throughout Pennsylvania and Virginia. Cranberry Township's drop-off location is at the municipal center.
The public is invited to bring their used flags to the upcoming ceremony, joining the service group members, volunteers, supporters, and event sponsors.
Businesses that sponsor community projects such as this often seek out Logo Design services for use as part of their event advertising.
The Retire Your Old Glory Ceremony will be held on Flag Day, which is Sunday, June 14, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at Community Park in Cranberry Township. City officials will be allocating an area in the park as a permanent space for the ashes of the retired American flags.
