Cranberry Township disc golf event now a national qualifier

Players in the upcoming Butler County Disc Golf Classic (BCDGC) will be aiming to qualify for a limited number of spots in the United States Disc Golf Championship and the Throw Pink Women’s Disc Golf Championship.

Disc golf is a game that is scored in a similar way to golf, but rather than clubs and a ball, a flying disc is thrown towards targets. The targets are usually metal baskets installed above the ground, which act as the “hole” where a player's final shot lands. Just like in golf, trees and natural hazards can be obstacles to a disc golf player.

The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) is the sport’s sanctioning body and has over 300,000 members around the world who play on nearly 10,000 courses. Nine-hole courses can be located on as little as five acres and often are partnered with existing parks and recreational areas.

The three-day tournament in Cranberry Township has been moved to May this year and will include play for both professionals and amateurs. For the pros, the event also features $5,000 in added cash to be split among competitive divisions. Amateur players can receive coupons of $20 to put toward related merchandise.
