Non-profit group Raising the Bar of Bristol Borough has been given an amount of $60,000 to create a commemorative display honoring President-elect Abraham Lincoln’s historic 1861 stop in the borough.
A permanent display at the site will be created using the funding. The site was the only stop Lincoln made in Bucks County during his train ride from Springfield, Illinois to Washington, D.C. prior to his inauguration. Banner printing can be used at such sites to inform residents and visitors of any upcoming projects.
The site is in front of the Snyder-Girotti School. On this site, a section of the track marking the approximate point where Lincoln made a brief visit on February 21, 1861 has been preserved. It will have a covered train platform, heritage signage, steel silhouette figures of Lincoln and the crowd that greeted him, landscaping, lighting, and a storytelling component with links to speeches made by Lincoln.
State Representative Tina Davis said that that this project will preserve an important moment in both local and national history, and will bring residents and visitors to a place where they can experience the rich cultural history of Bristol. She expressed her pride in helping to support an initiative that highlights the role of the town in one of the most consequential chapters in the history of the United States.
