Early learning center to open in Bristol

The Martha Miller Early Learning Center will be opening in Bristol later this year. The center will be offering academic enrichment programs for students in preschool through third grade.

The facility is owned by the town and will be the home to two programs. One is a 21st Century Community Learning Center and the other is a Head Start program. The two programs will operate separately but will have a partnership.

Van Strother, community development director, said that children in kindergarten through second grade learn to read and by grades 3 through 12 they read to learn. He said, however, that there are some children in grades three and four who are having difficulty reading.

Strother said that the building was built in 2005, and extensive renovations took place last year. Among the improvements are new lighting, flooring, heating and cooling system, burglar and fire alarm system, roof, and commercial kitchen. There is also a new secure outdoor play area spanning 13.500 square feet and a parking lot for 18 vehicles.

Brochure printing is one way that residents can learn more about such schools and their benefits for students.

Various federal agencies help to fund the project and included the United States Department of Education, United States Department of House and Urban Development, United States Department of Agriculture, and the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
