WVWA annual auction goes virtual this year

The Willamette Valley Wineries Association (WVWA) recently announced that the 2020 Willamette:The Pinot Noir Auction will be held August 11-13 as a virtual event.

Started in 2016, this year’s trade auction was originally scheduled for the spring, but was postponed before being reimagined as a virtual auction. Attended by top buyers at the vanguard of the wine industry, the proceeds of the auction fund the annual marketing activities of the WVWA.

Licensed wine sellers interested in bidding can take part in a series of virtual wine tastings from August 3-7 being held by 80 wineries and winemakers throughout the Portland area. Registered bidders on August 11 will be given access to begin placing bids on an online auction site. The bidding will go on through August 13. Fritz Hatton, a well-respected auctioneer, will be hosting the event. In certain instances, fine wines may be given as corporate gifts.

Minimum opening bids are pre-set and will go to the WVWA for marketing and education, while the proceeds in excess of the opening bids will be given to the Open for Good Campaign orchestrated by the James Beard Foundation. Open for Good provides assistance to independent restaurants looking to recover from the pandemic.

The 80 lots of wine - 6 Chardonnay and 74 Willamette Valley, one-of-a-kind, 2018 vintage Pinot noir - are exclusive to the auction and were produced in very limited quantities; in some instances, as little as five cases.
