Portland ranks in best US cities for child rearing

Recently WalletHub compiled another study ranking cities with the subject this time being best cities for raising families and Portland garnered a highly favorable spot on the list.

Of the 180 cities WalletHub compared, Portland was among the top 25 in the United States for raising children in 2025, and the highest Oregon city on the list. While the cite admits that “best” is a subjective term, it has developed an equation that it believes is able to parse the various elements of a family-friendly city.

Cities were evaluated in five major categories: Education and Child Care, Family Fun, Health and Safety, Socioeconomics, and Affordability. Portland garnered a composite score of 61 earning it the No. 22 spot on the list. The city did best in Education and Childcare ranking No. 7 in that category. The area where it needs the most work is Healthy and Safety where it was ranked No. 116.

The next Oregon city down the list from Portland was Salem with a composite score of 48.17 which secured it the No. 122 spot on the list.

In a separate study conducted by the website Niche, which provides information and ranks school districts and individual schools, the three best school districts in the city as of 2025 were Lake Oswego, Riverdale and Camas.
