The 3.4-acre Washington Park property operated for 20 years from 2001 as a children’s museum until 2021; plus, starting in 2010 the Opal Charter School. According to KOIN 6 the museum had on average 250,000 visitors per year; while the Opal School, served over 500 youngsters and 10,000 educators, yet was forced to shut down four years ago. Reasons for the building being permanently closed included a significant downward trend in revenue and attendance exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like museums, zoos have multiple printing needs including that of banner printing, plus signage, Postcards and customized attire printing.
Heidi Rahn, the director of the Oregon Zoo explained the situation during a city council meeting saying:
“Over the past 65 years, we’ve learned so much about what it takes to run a modern zoo. We’ve created better and larger habitats for animals and greatly improved our facilities, but we’ve been constrained by our physical limitations on the site. This would give us a chance to dream a little bit bigger.”
Rahn went on to say that the space could be utilized for conservation and education purposes, additional animal habitat space or guest services, to name just a few options.
