In response to students and alumni of Wilson High School in SW Portland, the school board agreed to change the school’s name, with Ida B. Wells-Barnett likely lending her name to it.
Various stakeholders of Wilson H.S. have described Wells-Barnett as well-known, accomplished, and a superb lecturer and writer with a great historical impact.
Over a century ago Wells-Barnett was a journalist who used Ida B. Wells, her maiden name, as her by-line. As a journalist, she worked to expose how some white officials used untrue validations to excuse the lynching of black men. In addition to being an investigative journalist, she also co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
The decision to rename the school was announced in July by Filip Hristic, Wilson High Principal, and answers called for Woodrow Wilson, the 28th U.S. President, to have his name dropped from the school due to actions like segregating federal offices and supporting racial hate groups.
Wilson is not the only Portland High School that will be undergoing a name change; James Madison High in the Northeast part of the city will open with a new name once construction is finished in the fall of 2021.
