December event celebrates Scandinavian culture

ScanFair is taking place next month in Portland for two days, providing a throwback to Christmas markets held in Nordic countries.

Vendors will be on hand to sell a variety of Scandinavian-related items, such as clothing, works of art, and Christmas decorations. Guests will also have the opportunity to sample some traditional food enjoy musical entertainment such as the band Gangspil, which features folk music from Denmark. Other performers are set to include the Vasa Youth Dancers, Leikarringen of Portland, and the Nordlys Dancers.

Guests can learn all about Nordic genealogy or find out about local language schools. They can also watch the crowning of Oregon Lucia, who will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

The younger ones will not be forgotten and can enjoy the Pippi Longstocking Children’s Area, which is set to feature Nordic Christmas crafts and a scavenger hunt.

In addition, there will be pickled herring and meatball eating contests. Last but not least, Joulupukki (the Finnish Santa Claus) will be making several appearances.
