Convention celebrates science fiction and fantasy

Westercon 69 is taking place next month in Portland for four days.

This is an annual science fiction and

fantasy convention that attracts visitors from all over the region.

The convention will feature artists, writers and real-life scientists. There will be panel discussions and talks. A big part of the event will be Gear Con, which is dedicated to steampunk art, literature and music. This year’s special guests will include writer John Scalzi, artist Theresa Mather, and Bobak Ferdowski from NASA.

There will also be an art show, a pre-registered writer’s workshop and a dealer’s room. The dealer’s room will feature related merchandise such as books, posters and action figures for sale. Several fan groups will also be on hand to provide information about their organizations.

A masquerade competition is set to take place on July 2. Contestants will compete for prizes in four different categories including young fan, novice, open and exhibition.

The participating dealers may be working with Portland printing companies to bring more attention to their booths by providing banners and signage.

Westercon 69 will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Portland from July 1 to 4. A four-day pass is $60, tickets for Saturday and Sunday are $40 each, Friday costs $30 and Monday is $25. Visit the official website for the most current information.
