What's Happening in Portland, OR…

Construction project off and running on SE Hawthorne

A three-month long road construction project is now underway to increase space for bicycles and cut down on problems between bikes, buses, cars, and pedestrians.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has begun the project of creating protected lanes starting from 12th Avenue along Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard to the Hawthorne Bridge. To minimize traffic congestion, most of the work will take place at night.

Sometimes, large companies turn to print shops to have posters or flyers made up to remind employees of long-term construction projects so they will allow more time, or to find alternative routes.

Both Madison Street and Hawthorne Boulevard will be designated work zones and travelers through the area are cautioned to slow down and remain alert for flaggers and signs. Some lanes will be closed.

Sidewalks in the area will stay open and a lane for bicycle traffic will be maintained. Businesses will stay open, although parking may be limited.

A new bus lane, plus a turn lane, will be created on Hawthorne. On Madison, the existing bus lane will be upgraded. Other changes will include a separation of through-moving bicycle and pedestrian traffic from right turns onto Southeast Seventh Avenue via a traffic signal.

Potential collisions between through-moving bicyclists, buses and pedestrians and right-turning vehicles will be reduced by eliminating right turns onto Southeast Sixth Avenue from Hawthorne and to Sixth from Madison Street.
