A bomb sniffing K-9 working for the Port of Portland has a shot at winning an American Humane Society’s 2024 Hero Dog Award.
Jacky is a German shorthaired who, as part of his job, regularly patrols Portland’s public transport routes and is now a semi-finalist in the category of “Law Enforcement and First Responder”. An explosive detection canine, she was trained at the Lackland Air Force Base under the direction of the TSA. Her hero profile described her rise to fame saying:
“Quickly earning top honors in her class, she embarked on an adventure to Portland.”
Among the highlights of Jacky’s career was last February when she traveled to Las Vegas for a bomb-sniffing assignment at the Super Bowl LVIII. She assisted in protecting more than 61,000 people, which included such well-known individuals as Taylor Swift, Usher, and Patrick Mahomes. Other notable assignments have included working at the World Athletic Championship, MLB All Star Game and Olympic Trials.

Jacky’s handler, Officer Charlie Berry chronicles the crime fighting K-9’s adventures on Instagram as well as what she gets up to on her days off. According to Officer Berry, although her real joy is her job, she also enjoys exploring the scenery in the Pacific Northwest.
