Lake Oswego school district to introduce new courses

Video game technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and jazz may become subjects taught in the Lake Oswego School District next fall.

LaKeyshua Washington, Executive Director of Teaching and Curriculum, has proposed 10 classes that could be taught to high school students next year. Among the courses Washington is proposing for Lakeridge High School are percussion ensemble, principles in teaching, human growth and development, and introduction to biotechnology, while courses Washington is proposing for Lake Oswego High School include Graphic Design II, Video Games as Interactive Narratives, and Introduction to Artificial Intelligence.

The members of the Lake Oswego School Board expressed enthusiasm for these courses. Brian Bills, Vice Chairman of the board, said that such courses as Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Introduction to Biotechnology are career paths that are very much sought after these days. He added that this is what the board is looking for when considering student engagement and ensuring that students feel challenged and are inspired so that they look forward to coming to school.

Jennifer Schiele, Superintendent of the district, said that if a student finds that a particular course is not offered at their high school, they will have the option to go to the other high school in order to take that course.

The board will vote on these courses at their meeting on Monday, January 9.
