Unique book discussion comes to Corvallis

The Corvallis-Benton County Public Library is hosting its latest edition of Random Review this fall, covering the book Code Dependent: Living in the Shadow of AI by Madhumita Murgia.

Each month, an expert in a field reviews a book on that same topic. In December, Code Dependent is being reviewed by Laurie Bridges, a Librarian and the Director of the Oregon State University’s AI Literacy Center.

The AI Literacy Center, serving the OSU community, helps people make informed decisions regarding the use of AI technology. AI, or artificial intelligence, refers to machine-learning software that can be used for various tasks, such as finding patterns. However, Generative AI, or GenAI, which can create text or images, is a new form of AI that is particularly tricky to navigate. That’s why the AI Literacy Center helps people by providing the most information available about how it works.

The Code Dependent book also touches on the topic of the moral quandaries presented by AI and the implications of human beings’ growing dependence on it.

Book events like this may choose to use Stationery printers for creating informational displays.

Random Review: Code Dependent: Living in the Shadow of AI is happening on December 10 from Noon to 1 p.m. in the Main Meeting Room at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library at 645 NW Monroe Ave. in Corvallis.
