True crime podcast lecture comes to Corvallis

What goes into the making of a hit true crime podcast? That is the question that will be answered during a lecture at Oregon State University in Corvallis this April.

The Making of True Crime: Behind the Scenes is being hosted at the Patricia Valian Reser Venter for the Creative Arts (PRAx) and will feature freelance journalist Leah Sottile, author Justin St. Germain and investigative reporter Ryan Haas.

The discussion will dissect the phenomenon of the true crime genre bursting onto the mainstream via Books, TV shows and serialized audio programs. Though the genre’s popularity is undeniable, ethical questions surrounding victim exploitation and privacy issues remain a hot talking point.

Haas and Sottile, who collaborate to create the popular true crime podcast on Oregon Public Broadcasting, called Hush, will give their perspective alongside an OSU professor of a true crime course, St. Germain.

With moderation provided by OSU Director of the Center for the Humanities Megan Ward, Haas will pore over his work related to federal accountability and criminal justice while Sottile will offer insights into her process of writing exposes such as Blazing Eyes See All and When the Moon Turns to Blood.

Lecture events like this may choose to use brochure printing to create recommendation lists of materials, audience programs and season schedules.

The Making of True Crime is happening on April 1 at 7 p.m. at the Detrick Hall of the PRAx arts venue at 470 SW 15th Street in Corvallis. Admission is free.
