Eraserhead is screening at the Whiteside Theatre this November.
The 1977 film directed by David Lynch centers on Jack Nance’s Henry Spencer living in an industrial environment. He and his angry girlfriend, Charlotte Stewart’s Mary X, share a mutant child together who screams incessantly.
Mixing together elements of horror and surrealism, Eraserhead heralded the arrival of Lynch with his directorial debut for a feature-length film. The four-time Academy Award-nominated director would become known for his distinct style that often ignores the typical story structure in favor of creating atmospheric scenes and open-ended narratives, traits present in his first film. He would go on to direct such classics as The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and co-create the unique noir television series Twin Peaks.
With a mission of enriching the arts in downtown Corvallis, the non-profit Whiteside Theatre started out as Oregon’s second grand movie palace ever built in 1922. The building and its interior still boast the Italian Renaissance architectural style from its inception.
In addition to retaining many elements from the 1920s period, including its brick facade and ornamental designs, the theatre also has a neon marquee from the 1950s.
