Important environmental conference planned in Corvallis

A vital conference about managing water will be held soon in Corvallis.

The Interagency Conference on Research in the Watersheds (ICRW) will bring together managers, stakeholders, and watershed scientists to discuss management strategies and scientific discoveries that will allow communities to manage and sustain water resources throughout the country. The conference concentrates on watersheds, as they are the basic unit being used to plan the management of resources.

The goals of the conference are to understand better the impetus for change in the watersheds, and the impact of those changes. Attendees will also discuss ways of incorporating scientific uncertainty and society’s needs into the issue of how to manage water resources sustainably.

The three-day conference includes workshops, field trips, and opportunities for networking, which will provide opportunities for attendees to exchange Business Cards.

The five workshops are highly technical, but the field trips, while also scientific, provide a chance for attendees to see the watersheds for themselves, on trips around the region. There are seven available – a tour of the Corvallis area, a hike up Mary’s Peak in the coastal range, an agricultural tasting tour of the Willamette Valley, a trip to the Oregon Coast, a rafting trip on the Willamette River, a tour of the McKenzie River Basin from ridge to river, and a hiking tour of the Metolius River.

The conference is June 5 to 8, with most of the activities taking place at the LaSells Stewart Center at Oregon State University.
