Corvallis festival celebrates 50th anniversary

Corvallis will celebrate the 50th year of the Corvallis Fall Festival, and it promises to be a fantastic party.

The festival was the brainchild of a local businesswoman, Rose Ostby, who grew weary of hearing residents complain about Corvallis not having any festivals. She decided to start one that would celebrate cultures from throughout the globe, and talked to Karl Cayford, the Executive Director of the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce. He liked the idea, but thought a small arts festival might be better, and the festival was born.

It was decided that artists had to create their own items, none could be purchased. The policy has remained in effect, and visitors will find works in all kinds of media from oil and watercolor to fabric and wood.

Food vendors will each be raising money for a specific charity. Among those planning to attend are Nick’s Soul Food, who will be serving chicken, pork, or shrimp n grits, and more to support Corvalis CERT; and Happy Go Lucky Crepes, raising funds for Fresh& Local First!

A variety of live music is planned. Among the bands scheduled are The Nettles, who play traditional Celtic music; indie rockers West, based in Corvallis; and roots music outfit The Creighton Lindsey Band.

The festival is September 23, from 10.00 am until 6.00 pm, and September 24, from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm, at Central Park. When complex events like this are planned, organizers can use flyer printing to create schedules for visitors.
