Bend skiers and snowshoers come together for fundraiser

An event organized by a Bend-based not-for-profit group recently saw snowshoers and skiers from the area unite to help raise both awareness and funds for women’s heart health.

XC Oregon put together the annual event, known as the ‘Tour for the Heart’, which took place at Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center. Many of those who took part entered into the festive spirit of the day and came dressed in costumes.

The course was 5 km long, and according to XC Oregon’s coach and director J.D. Downing, while having fun was the order of the day, the serious side of raising awareness about heart health for women was at the forefront. Brochures that give further information about cardiovascular disease can be provided to all those who come out so that they can learn more about it, and hopefully share this knowledge with their friends and families.

Everyone was welcome to participate, no matter what their skill level was, and there were prizes awarded for the best costumes and also music and food.

Dowling further remarked that the event tends to raise a few thousand dollars, which is donated to the American Heart Association’s Oregon chapter in Portland.

Some of the groups who helped to sponsor the day were Therapeutic Associates, The Center Orthopedic & Neurosurgical Care & Research, and also the Bend Memorial Clinic.
