2000s-defining band to rock Bend

Bend’s Hayden Homes Amphitheater is hosting Jimmy Eat World this July.

Considered a major influence in the modern sound of pop/rock and emo, Jimmy Eat World is celebrating 25 years of what has endured as its most infectious track, “The Middle.”

Expressing an uplifting sentiment, the hit single from their 2001 album Bleed American was fueled by lead singer Jim Adkins’ feelings of uncertainty in his early 20s.

This theme of uncertainty is a reflection of the band’s standing on the charts at the time. With the 1999 album Clarity, Jimmy Eat World experienced a commercial flop, though the work would go on to amass a cult following and, retrospectively, be appreciated as a touchstone in the emo music genre.

After Clarity, the band was dropped by their record label and independently financed the follow-up, Bleed American. From the perspective of sales, it was a make-or-break moment for the band that ended up paying off, even as Adkins has claimed the naive optimism of “The Middle” is actually meant to be satirical.

Jimmy Eat World, featuring Motion City Soundtrack and Illuminati Hotties, is performing on July 17 at 6 p.m. at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater at 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Dr in Bend.
