Bend residents invited to learn more about big cats

Those who live in Bend and the surrounding area and who want to learn more about one of the area’s most well known species of wildlife are invited to an upcoming presentation.

Biologist Rick Hopkins will be giving a talk at the Tower Theater that address the topic of cougars and the conservation measures that he feels are needed to protect them. He will discuss the part they play in the ecosystems they occupy, popular myths about the species, the history of the methods that have been used to manage these large predators and how this can be modernized in a way that encourages good conservation practices.

Dr. Hopkins is a co-owner of Live Oak Associates and is also the company’s senior conservation biologist. The enterprise is based in California, and provides its clients with solutions to wildlife management issues. Dr. Hopkins is also currently the president of the board of directors for the Cougar Fund, which promotes science based wildlife management methods for this species. Brochures can be given to audience members at event such as this to provide them with further details and contact information for the organizations that hosted them.
