The Parma Youth Commission has recently welcomed some new members, and is working to restore a fireworks celebration to the city’s Fourth of July celebrations.
The group comprises young people in grades 9-12 who want to be more active in the community. Commission members have a chance to take part in local government, network with nonprofit and business leaders, and plan service projects that will help make Parma a better place for younger people.
Parma City Council president Sean Brennan, who acts as the young commission advisor, introduced the new members at a special meeting held November 9. The recruits come from Normandy High School, Parma Senior High School, Holy Name High School, and Padua Franciscan High School. One of the new members is a Cleveland State University freshman.
The new inductees have a common goal: to raise funds to put on the fireworks display again, according to Megan McDonald, who is a sophomore from Holy Name. The display is estimated to cost between $80,000 and $100,000, part of which goes to pay for the safety personnel needed to protect residents.
Each new member revealed why they volunteered for the commission. Dan Rush, from Normandy High, said he wanted to “give back to the community”.
Members might work with a flyer printing company on a mailer asking residents to support the fireworks display.
