Parma officials weigh 2025-2026 winter salt needs

Parma Service Director Tony Vannello believes in being prepared and to that end is considering adding another salt dome to ensure the city’s streets will be navigable next winter.

Parma currently has two salt domes. At the service garage on Chevrolet Boulevard the city’s main salt dome has a 5,000 ton plus capacity and at its Nike Site Park a smaller 500-ton capacity structure serves as a backup. To be on the safe side, Vanello would like to add another 5,000-ton dome.

In addition to the convenience of having adequate road salt on hand, there is also an economic component to consider such as being able to purchase enough salt early in the season before scarcity causes the price to go up. At this time Parma can store only about half of the salt it anticipates needing next winter unless it rents space at Cargill, another expense.

Flyer printing services are sometimes used by municipalities to keep the public abreast of city expenditures.

A new salt dome will cost about $200,000, and Vanello is also looking into alternatives such as wood structures for salt storage, which he believes could be less costly. Another option would be to rent a conveyor to fill the salt domes rather than filling them as they do now with dump trucks, which reduces the available storage space.

Although winter seems far away the deadline for sodium chloride contracts with the Ohio Department of Transportation is the first of May.
