Deliberations to prevent a salt shortage this winter first considered adding another salt dome location, which would have been the city’s third, in a more strategically located area of Parma such as Ridgewood Golf Course. Unfortunately, the associated price tag of $300,000 caused this idea to be shelved. Instead, a Sodium Chloride Reduction Grant from the EPA in the amount of $75,000 was to be used to repair Parma’s main salt dome and then a third salt storage facility for the city would be added at the service garage.

Tony Vannello, Parma’s Service Director explained:
“It’s our responsibility to have a majority of the rock salt we need for the season on-site before the season begins to basically control our own destiny. That’s what this new dome is going to do.”
According to Vannello, the average usage of rock salt for Parma is 9,000 – 12,000 tons. Once work has finished at the service garage the city will have two salt domes each with a 5,500-ton capacity there as well as a small receptacle at Nike Site Park with a 1,000-ton capacity.
