Pickleball courts to be built in Parma Heights

Pickleball—a game that is a blend of tennis, volleyball, and table tennis—has become one of the world’s fastest-growing games. As a result of the interest in the sport, the Recreation Department in Parma Heights has set up a pickleball program suitable for everyone, including the building of new courts.

The courts will be constructed at Greenbrier Commons, and will be available to all Parma Heights residents. The sport's popularity is illustrated by the fact that games are being played in the gym and at the civic center in nearby Independence, where the town's recreation department has organized them.

Michael Byrne, Parma Heights' mayor, related that pickleball was invented on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, in 1965. From its beginnings as a game in the backyard, the sport has grown to the extent that over two million people play it in the United States, with more playing around the world. He believes it will be popular with the residents.

Those who are not familiar with the sport will have a chance to learn how to play it at a pickleball clinic conducted by Claudia Fontana, a local expert. Fontana will explain pickleball's rules, and then teach people how to play. The clinic is scheduled for this Saturday, July 29, at 10:00 am.

Events like this can benefit if organizers work with a flyer printing company on a handout showing the time and place of the clinic, and also listing the game's rules.
