Parma seniors get ready to party

Parma seniors need to pull out their mumus, Hawaiian shirts, and their grass skirts, and get ready to party as the Smallwood Activities Center, once known as the

Parma Senior Center, is gearing up for its yearly “Island Luau.”

The day features a tropical lunch, raffles, snacks, dancing and singing, with Glenn Toth providing the music. In addition, partiers will have a chance to win prizes, learn the traditional hula, and watch the Raisin' Canes Luau show.

Fun for seniors continues in September, when the activities center celebrates its 50th anniversary with a party and dance. Surprises, prizes, lunch, and live entertainment promise a great day for all. Frank and Dean will entertain, and the music will be courtesy of Wayne Tomsic.

The luau is slated for August 19, Wednesday, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. The activities center is in Parma, at 7001 West Ridgewood Drive. Tickets are $10, and everyone is welcome.

September's anniversary party will be held at St. Michael's Woodside Party Center, an event venue in Broadview Heights, at 5025 East Mill Road, about 11 miles from Parma. The center is known for its great food and friendly staff. Advance tickets are $10, and are now on sale at the Smallwood Activities Center.

Center officials might consider working with a banner printing company on a Hawaiian-themed banner to hang above the door, welcoming party-goers on Wednesday.
