It has recently been announced that Parma is to receive the sum of $107,400 in the form of a Cuyahoga County Healthy Urban Tree Canopy Grant. The funds are going to be used to plant 200 new trees in the former Marlborough Park, also known as Ward 1 amenity or Petruska Park.
According to Mayor Tim DeGeeter, Parma’s application was ranked No. 9 of the top 18 project to be awarded funds.
Executive Director Mary Cierebiej of the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission explained that 200 trees comprised of 23 different native species would be planted in a grassy section of the 7.25-acre park. She went on to say:
“The goal of the project is to significantly change the urban canopy and provide social, environmental and health benefits to the surrounding community. Parma’s long-stated goal in applications for Healthy Urban Tree Canopy Grant funding has been to achieve a 40 percent tree canopy. They currently have a 26 percent tree canopy.”
Species of trees chosen were recommended by the West Creek Conservancy and include basswood, beech, birch, black gum, black tupelo, boxelder, elm, hackberry, honey locust, hickory, hornbeam, hop hornbeam, linden, magnolia, oak, pawpaw, pecan, plane tree, serviceberry, sycamore, and walnut.
