Parma plans celebration of Ukrainian Independence Day

A quarter of a century ago, Ukraine won its independence from the Soviet Union, and Parma is getting ready to celebrate the occasion with a festival and parade.

The route begins at St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, then goes north to St. Josaphat, the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral located on State Road in Parma’s Ukrainian Village. It has become a tradition for people to line State Road to watch as parade participants celebrate their heritage with this parade, which is now seven years old.

Marta Liscynesky, who is the United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio’s president, organized both the festival and the parade. Marta’s father, Bill Liscynesky, will serve as the parade’s grand marshal. He is a past president of the United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio, and has been doing business in Parma since 1969. Also marching in the parade are Tim DeGeeter, Parma’s mayor, and members of the city council.

After the parade, there will be a ceremony at St. Josaphat, where the festivities will continue until 11:00 pm. Among the activities are live music, games, and a raffle. Presiding over the celebration will be Bishop Daniel of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of America, along with Bishop Bohdan and Bishop Emeritus Robert, both of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.

The festivities start at 11:00 am on August 27. Events like these can be enhanced if organizers work with banner printing companies to create festive Banners to enhance the fun.
