Parma gets prepared for the winter

Parma is ready for whatever comes its way this winter, thanks to the fact that it has 11,000 tons of salt stored away to use when roads get icy. The municipality paid about half a million dollars for the salt, while the smaller community of Seven Hills has 6,000 tons available.

Heavy snow has already fallen throughout Ohio, making it clear that this winter is likely to bring a degree of disruption with regard to snow removal and road safety. Last year, many communities were overwhelmed by a prolonged spell of bad weather, and were unable to keep roads clear.

On the morning of Friday, November 14, a warning of lake-effect snow was issue for Cuyahoga County, as if to let the area know what is expected over the coming weeks.

Cities throughout the county ran low on salt or ran out entirely last year, as the region was pounded with blizzard after blizzard. When the salt was gone, most cities opted to treat only main thoroughfares, hills, and intersections, leaving side streets unsalted. Others warned residents and drivers of the shortage and asked them to drive responsibly to avoid accidents.

Parma officials might consider working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, warning them of the likely conditions but also reassuring them the city is ready to meet winter's challenges.
