Clinic to raise Parma cheers

A community event that inspires everyone is coming up this week in Parma. The Valley Forge High School Junior Cheer Clinic is all set, and will take place at Independence Boulevard school.

The annual clinic is both a community booster and a fundraiser, and has been held every year for approximately 10 years, according to Kathy Korfant, who coaches junior varsity football cheerleading as well as teaching cheerleading for the varsity basketball team. She says the clinic sparks interest in the activity in younger children, who might like to try cheerleading when they get older.

There are usually 10 to 30 participants in each clinic. They learn the skills important to basic cheerleading, including how to inspire the crowd, and the motions and jumps they need to do. They also learn a dance to do with the band, which they will perform the day after the clinic at a varsity basketball game. Although events like this are active, organizers can use flyer printing to create handouts about the lessons the participants learn during the workshop.

Parma's middle schools also have cheerleading programs, Korfant says, but the clinic is aimed specifically at younger girls who might be interested in becoming cheerleaders in high school. She said some of those who have attended the clinic have gone on to do just that.

The clinic is set for this Thursday, January 17, in the school's cafeteria.
