City Council supports lower speed limit

In response to concerns from city residents, Parma City Council has unanimously passed a resolution supporting a new speed limit of 20 mph on side streets, down from 25 mph.

Councilman Roy Jech who placed the resolution before council told Fox 8:

“Quite a few cities across the country have done this. The major cities are Boston, Minneapolis, Portland. They’ve done it citywide on all their residential streets, so that kind of gave me the idea.”

He went on to say that with more young families moving to Parma, more children will be in the city’s neighborhoods and the lower speed limit could make the side streets safer for them.

A flyer printing service can assist a local government of citizen led campaign in putting the facts and figures in front of the public in order to get them onboard with a proposal.

Proponents of lowering the speed limit hope that doing so will reduce the number of drivers taking side streets to avoid traffic lights and save time.

Reducing the speed limit is not an easy, straight-forward task. A number of obstacles, one of which is having comprehensive traffic studies done before putting the matter before the Ohio General Assembly for approval. Plus, changing the speed limit law could affect other cities in Ohio that are unchartered.

Parma City Council’s speed limit resolution has been sent to lawmakers in Columbus for consideration.
