The Parma Symphony Orchestra is planning to give its audiences an Irish holiday this year, when it joins with Tomáseen Foley's group to present the show ‘A Celtic Christmas’.
Foley's production is now 20 years old, and recreates a Christmas Eve in rural Ireland some time during the 1940s and 1950s. The people gathered in a farmhouse sing carols, tell stories, and perform traditional dances. For this performance, the Parma Symphony will play along with the musicians in Foley's group as the story unfolds.
On stage with Foley and the PSO will be William Coulter, who has won a Grammy for his guitar playing; Edwin Huizinga on the fiddle; vocalist Kara Mathias; Brian Bigley, a bagpipe player and champion dancer, and the Leneghan Academy of Irish Dance.
Randolph P. Laycock, the Music Director of the Parma Symphony, says the organization has performed in joint concerts, but this is the first time it has worked with a group like Foley's. He is hoping that the performance will catch on, and become a recurring event.
The orchestra is comprised of 75 musicians from throughout Northeastern Ohio, and is now performing its 49th season, with 55 performing in the upcoming concert.
‘A Celtic Christmas’ is scheduled for this Sunday, December 17, at 3:00 pm in the auditorium of the Valley Forge High School.
