Fremont offers immersive historical experience

People will have the opportunity to explore the day-to-day living conditions in a 19th-century military encampment during the Civil War Winter Camp this October in Fremont. The event is being supported by Mosser Construction.

The event recreates the atmosphere of winter encampments similar to those of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the regiment once led by President Rutherford B. Hayes. Highlights include military drills, interpretive talks, and an exhibition by reenactors portraying the 5th U.S. Colored Troops. Also featured are historical portrayals of veterans from the Grand Army of the Republic.

Educational programming includes a presentation on Hayes’ military service and hands-on events for children. Attendees can also enjoy performances by military-style bands and complimentary Model-T rides provided by Firelands Timeless Ts—vehicles once used by veterans to attend reunions. Food is not included in the ticket price but will be available for purchase.

Camp tours, lasting approximately 50 minutes, take place outdoors and require advance ticket purchase. Performances and lectures are open to the public at no additional charge. Admission for non-members is $10 for those 13 and up, $7 for ages 6 to 12, and free for children 5 and under. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums members will receive discounted rates of $8 for those 13 and over and $5 for those 6 to 12. A 20% discount is also available for site passes.

Historical experiences like this may use flyer printing to get the word out. It takes place on Saturday, October 25, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at 52 Spiegel Grove, Fremont.
