Howard Hewett is a native of Akron, Ohio who began singing when he was a child, performing with a family group, The Hewett Singers, where he was the frontman. He sang with a funk group, Lyle, when he was a teenager, then relocated to Los Angeles where he founded a group called “Beverly Hills.”
His breakthrough came in 1978 when he joined Shalamar, the soul and R&B group created by Don Cornelius and Dick Griffey, as the male lead singer. Hewett, Jeffrey Daniel, and Jody Watley were the original lineup. Watley’s voice blended well with Hewett’s tenor, and Daniels’ skill at dancing completed the group. The group’s “feel good” hits include “A Night to Remember” and “The Second Time Around.”
Daniels and Whatley left Shalamar in 1983, but Hewett remained, now partnered with Delisa Davis and Mickey Free. This lineup contributed to film soundtracks including “Beverly Hills Cop,” with the song “Don’t Get Stopped in Beverly Hills,” which won a Gemmy.
When Shalamar disbanded in the 1980s, Hewett then had a solo career and continues to release new music.
A review says:
“What a great show! Howard performed old/new hits of his own and some from Shalamar.”
