The Wailin’ Jennys were established almost by accident. In 2002, Cara Luft, Nicky Mehta, and Ruth Moody gathered at a guitar shop in Winnipeg, Sled Dog Music, for a performance. They were a hit and John Sharples, the shop owner, suggested they do a second show, and then go on tour under the name the Wailin’ Jennys. Ruth Moody and Nicky Mehta are still with the group, and Heather Masse is now with the outfit.
In 2003, the group released an EP, “The Wailin’ Jennys,” and dropped their first album, “40 Days,” in 2004. They won a Juno Award for this album in the category of Roots and Traditional Album of the Year, and in 2012, they won a second Juno in this category for the album “Bright Morning Stars.” Their 2006 album “Firecracker” earned them another nomination for the same honor in 2007.
A review says:
“The Wailin’ Jennys . . . have gone from strength to strength since they formed in 2002.”
While the group has become successful within their genre due to their records, the most important factor in building their reputation is their live shows. Their close harmonies, guitar work, and frequently uproarious singalongs showcase their instrumental ability and stage presence.
The Wailin’ Jennys will appear at the Anderson Theater in Memorial Hall on June 14. Organizers of shows like this can promote them by using poster printing to create appropriate advertising.
