PurpleStride, an organization devoted to the fight against pancreatic cancer, recently held a fundraising march in Cincinnati. This is the seventh year for this event, which has drawn more participants every year, and has thus far raised over $1m.
The event was held at Sawyer Point, and the number of people wearing purple wigs and T-Shirts turned the area into a sea of the rich color.
PurpleStride started in Chicago in 2008, when a small group of volunteers marched in Grant Park to raise awareness of the disease. All of the original participants had personal experience with the disease, which had, at that time, a survival rate of 6% after five years. That first event raised $380,000 for research into pancreatic cancer, brought out over 1,600 people, and filled Grant Park with purple. The first gathering turned into a nationwide effort that has become ongoing.
PurpleStride is now the most important tool the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has to raise awareness of the condition, and the money to fight it. More than 50 events take place each year throughout the nation.
Among the Cincinnati marchers this year was Geri Rowan, a nurse who is a three-year pancreatic cancer survivor. She says her simple message is to stay faithful and hopeful.
Organizers sometimes work with a brochure printing company to create Booklets about their organization and ways to support it.
