When they first got together in Los Angeles in 1965, they called themselves the Versatiles, but in 1967, they changed their name to one that is now recognized the world over: The 5th Dimension. From 1967 until 1973, they charted 20 times, winning the Grammy for Record of the Year for “Medley: Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” which they released in 1969.
There were five members in the original group: Billy Davis, Jr., Ronald Townson, Florence LaRue, Marilyn McCoo, and Lamonte McLemore. After 50 years, LaRue is the only original member left, but she has added Floyd Smith, Patrice Morris, Leonard Tucker, and Willie Williams, who have increased the vocal range of the group and brought in new material, without losing the energy and showmanship that made the original 5th Dimension legendary.
A review says:
“Personal changes have done little to affect the overall quality of THE 5th DIMENSION’S sound. . . . The group [has] . . . set a standard for musical quality few groups could ever hope to match.”
The 5th Dimension will be at the Ludlow Garage on January 28. The doors will open at 7:00 pm for an 8:30 pm performance. Organizers of events like these can publicize them by using poster printing to create attractive advertising.
