The Fraternal Order of Police, the law enforcement officers' union in Cincinnati, elected a new leader recently.
Sergeant Dan Hils, a veteran of 28 years with the department, will take over as president of the union immediately. He replaces Kathy Harrell, the first female president in the union's history.
Hils thanked Harrell for her leadership of the organization, which took place during some of the most difficult situations the city has faced. However, he believes it is time for a new perspective, and said his highest priority will be to obtain more money for officers.
A new contract is coming up for negotiation, and Harry Black, the city manager, said it is probable that police will get raises. There have been only three raises for police in the last ten years, as Cincinnati has faced decreasing revenues.
Hils is looking forward to building a team that will benefit all the officers in the organization. He points out that some officers have advanced degrees—some have accounting degrees, others have law degrees, and some are CPAs—and he plans to surround himself with these highly intelligent people and depend on their advice. He hopes that his team and that of the city will be able to reach a reasonable agreement on wages quickly.
