The only five-diamond restaurant in Ohio is located in Cincinnati—it's Orchids, a fine-dining establishment in the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. It recently won five diamonds from the American Automobile Association (AAA), making it the third time it has been thus honored.
AAA recommends and inspects almost 59,000 restaurants and hotels in the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Canada, and awards five diamonds to only 0.3% of these. It awards four diamonds to approximately 2.1% of the total, and several Cincinnati restaurants made the four-diamond list. These included Boca Restaurant and the Palace at the Cincinnatian (both in the city's downtown) and Nicola's (in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood). Five Cincinnati hotels also won four-diamond status, making for a strong all-round performance from the city.
The AAA's Cheryl Parker noted that Orchids' chef Todd Kelly and his staff continually raise the bar of the fine dining establishment by committing themselves to providing diners with a first-class experience, and by serving outstanding cuisine.
In connection with the honor, Orchids is changing its operation, moving to mostly a tasting menu format. A tasting menu offers diners the opportunity to sample many of the restaurant’s dishes as a series of small plates, rather than entrees. Orchids will still offer some a la carte dishes, but will put the emphasis on the new format.
