Angel, a group discovered by Gene Simmons, KISS’s bass player, mixed progressive rock, hard rock, and glam rock into a heady blend, then coupled it with their outrageous stage shows and white-satin costumes to rock out as one of the 1970s and 1980s most colorful arena-rock outfits. They began their recording career in 1975 with “Angel,” their debut album, and followed it with “On Earth as It Is in Heaven” in 1977, and “Sinful,” in 1979.
Angel got together in Washington, D.C., and made their first recording for Casablanca Records, which was also KISS’s label. The popular “Tower” was on the debut album. In 1976, they released “Helluva Band,” which also introduced their now-iconic white-satin clothing on the album cover. “On Earth as It Is in Heaven” marked a change in their focus, as they moved away from heavy rock to a more pop sound.
Their career trajectory was anything but smooth, but the 2019 effort “Risen” was a huge hit, landing on several Billboard charts. They released a new album, “Once Upon a Time,” in 2023.
A concert review says:
“Angel knows how to rock a live stage all these years later, and the current lineup gets the job done and then some.”
