What's Happening in Cincinnati, OH…

Live broadcast to cheer local children

The Metropolitan Opera has had great success broadcasting its operas live to a worldwide audience that sees the performances in movie theaters. Now, Cincinnati Ballet is about to do the same thing, only it will be broadcasting the performance to patients at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

In order to make this broadcast possible, many people in the various organizations have worked together. Union members have agreed to waive their fees, the Children's Hospital has arranged the broadcast, and camera operators are working on a voluntary basis to bring the performance to the children.

Cincinnati Ballet has been working with the cancer awareness organization ‘The Cure Starts Now’ since 2009. The ballet sponsored the ‘Ballerina for a Day’ event, during which cancer patients and their families got a behind-the-scenes look at how the ballet works. Now, they can complete the cycle by seeing a live performance.

Cincinnati Ballet could work with brochure printers to create a program to distribute to the children at the hospital, giving a synopsis of the ballet.

The ballet being broadcast is the November 8 matinee performance of ‘Peter Pan’, at the Aronoff Center. Children who are too ill to go to the theater, as well as their families, will still be able to enjoy the magical tale of the little boy who never grew up, and his battles with the infamous Captain Hook, in their rooms at the hospital.
